What is co-working and is it for you?

Filed in: Business, Education

Do you have trouble staying focused and getting your work done?

Every Friday, I host a one-hour co-working session for photographers. My current focus is getting through my backlog of personal images. I’m adding additional sessions focused on planning social media posts, client communication, weekly reviews, etc.

So, what IS co-working?

We get a lot of questions about this. Think of it as a meeting you set with yourself, a dedicated time to focus, an uninterruptible time to get work done.

Here’s the Agenda:

  • Log on to Zoom
  • Write your intention for the work session in the chat (how many edited images do you want to complete?)
  • Turn off all notifications
  • Mute your mic
  • Spend 25 minutes culling
  • 5 minute reset
  • 25 minutes editing
  • Optional image share and accountability check in with the group.

The goal is to end the hour with a culled session and at least one edited image you’re happy with – whether it’s to print for your wall or to share on social media.

If you log on a few minutes late, you might be confused – why are we all just sitting in silence, on Zoom? I don’t know about you, but I am WAY more productive with a bit of accountability!

This meeting on my calendar and focusing on ONE goal is the perfect mix of constraints to keep me focused. I feel good when I’m done because I’ve accomplished something I intended to do (especially tasks I put off, like getting pictures of my own family edited)

If you show up late, drop your intention in the chat and get to work! We’ll welcome you and get caught up at the break!

Co-working time isn’t learning time, it’s action time!

It’s a commitment to get one thing done week after week, build good habits, and see results.

An hour seems like such a long time – until I’m 20 minutes into my allotted 25 minutes and realize I’m only 1/4 of the way through a gallery!

Working in timed segments can also help change how you allot your time and efforts when it comes to client workflow.

Have you ever really timed how long it takes you to get through an entire client session? Are you pricing your work accordingly? This is a great exercise to help you start to identify the moments when you get stuck and waste time or which pieces of your workflow are taking you WAY longer than you think they are. I’m literally changing EVERYTHING about how and what I offer clients now that I’m more aware of how inefficient my workflows and binge-editing all-nighters have been.

If you are great at scheduling your day, don’t get distracted, and always have everything on your to-do list checked off, co-working might not be for you.

If you’re like me and always feel like you’re running from thing to thing and never stop and just need some help focusing once in a while, this might be exactly what you need! Join us next time!
